Personal Observations

I have only recently become aware of this asistencia and will add more later.

History

Las Flores was one of the two important asistencias to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia. Las Flores was on the coast between Oceanside and San Clemente, on present day Camp Pendleton Marine Base. Father Peyri founded this asistencia in 1823. Within 35 years, it fell into disrepair and has not been preserved or restored. Only a few melting adobe bricks remain.

I will study this asistencia more and hope to complete this page. I have not yet visited this site but hope to soon. The information gathered here is from other web sites and unedited. I have not yet gathered enough information on this asistencia to finish this page as are the other pages in this site.

Further research is revieling many other asistencia missions. I will pursue this information.

San Diego Historical Society

Las Flores estancia was built around 1823, together with a lodging used as a halfway house between San Luis Rey and San Juan Capistrano Missions. The estancia, located on what was known as the "San Pedro Rancho," was under the jurisdiction of Mission San Luis Rey. The priests traveled regularly to preach at the estancia. The chapel served two native villages (Chumella and Questmille) both located in a nearby valley. Father Peyri, who founded and built the chapel and hostel, reported on Oct. 7, 1827, that corn, wheat, and barley were raised and cattle were grazed at nearby Las Pulgas. The area, later known as "Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores," is now Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base. It is about 10 miles south of San Clemente in San Diego County. The adobe structure and adjacent corral were the site of the April 1838 battle between Juan Bautista Alvarado and Carlos Antonio Carrillo contesting the provincial governorship of Alta California.

I have copied the following in whole. My apologies. I will do more research and edit it soon.

History

1823. Whatever you call the site, it was developed in 1823 by Padre Antonio Peyri and served Mission San Luis Rey de Francia as well as travelers along El Camino Real.

April 1838. The Las Flores location is most famous for the "battle" between Juan Bautista Alvarado and Carlos Antonio Carrillo. At stake was the governorship of California (the battle was a single cannon shot and Alvarado continued as governor).

After secularization, the Las Flores property (along with Mission San Luis Rey property) was assimilated into Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores; the biggest in California at some 200 square miles in size. The rancho was given to Pio de Jesus Píco and his brother as one of Pio Píco's land deals.

1864. The rancho was sold to a Píco brother-in-law, Englishman Juan (John) Forster. Forster developed the area and even attempted to start a new city (Forster City) in the area. This attempt failed.

When Forster died the rancho was taken over by James Flood via Richard O'Neill (Flood rented the rancho back to O'Neill).

1888. O'Neill rented the Las Flores adobe to a family named Magee. They remained on the property until 1968 when the last of the family died.

1942. The Marines took over the rancho and its properties for Camp Pendleton. O'Neill's son Jerome was managing the property at the time. (Side Note: The main house for the rancho is now used as quarters by the commander of Camp Pendleton.)

Location

The remains of the asistencia is on the grounds of Camp Pendleton Marine Base. The basic location of the asistencia has been turned over to the Boy Scouts; what little is left sits on a hill at the back of the Boy Scout area. Take the Las Pulgas Road exit from I5 and enter Camp Pendleton through the Las Pulgas gate (no guarantee--security may not allow civilian entry to the base). Proceed to the first intersection; turn right and just ahead at the bottom of the hill is the Boy Scount camp on the right (a total of about 0.6 miles from the gate). Turn right into the camp and drive (slowly!) through the area and straight across a small (usually dry) stream. Ahead of you at the top of the hill stands the fenced-in remains of the assistencia along with the California landmark sign.

San Deigo Historic Site 616 LAS FLORES (SAN PEDRO) ASISTENCIA

Las Flores asistencia was built around 1823, together with a lodging house used as a halfway house between San Luis Rey and San Juan Capistrano Missions. The asistencia, located on what was known as the "San Pedro Rancho," was under thejurisdiction of Mission San Luis Rey. The priests traveled regularly to preachat the asistencia.

Father Peyri reported on Oct. 7, 1827, that at the asistencia corn, wheat, and barley were raised and cattle were grazed at nearby Las Pulgas. The area, later known as "Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores," is now Camp Pendleton. It is about 10 miles south of San Clemente in San Diego County.

The adobe structure and adjacent corral were the site of the April 1838 battle between Juan Bautista Alvarado and Carlos Antonio Carrillo contesting the provincial governorship of Alta California.

Another web site describes Las Flores Adobe which followed the mission by many decades.

The 1869 Las Flores Adobe. It is a registered landmark. It is going to be rebuilt by the Boy Scouts of America which have a large campsite on these grounds. Boy Scouts are hosted from "all over." The adobe is in a very sad state of repair. There are very nice gardens to the left of the photo.

Straight to the rear, within walking distance, are the remains of another Historical landmark that is also in the need of extensive repair. This repair is also said to be performed by the BSA. It is called the Las Flores (San Pedro) Asistencia.

This asistencia is a California landmark. From 1823 to the 1840's the Las Flores (San Pedro) Asistencia consisted of a tile roofed adobe, a chapel, a hostel, stables and corrals. This complex was the work of Father Antonio Peyri. It was an asistencia to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, and for the comfort of traveler along the El Camino Real. There was a great battle waged here between Alvarado and Carrillo over the ownership of Alta California. It is said that the Boy Scouts are to restore this area also. The only remains that are left is a pile of adobe that is covered with a shed roof, and a tarp over the pile of adobe.
